Hello again, it's just me this time, Laura. After a few weeks back home it was time for me to hit the road again. It was a very easy start rolling through the Netherlands, Belgium and a short stretch of Northern France to the ferry to Dover. Mostly flat and often car-free is this part of Europe a cyclist's paradise. Christina accompanied me until Belgium - and happily exchanged her saddle for a comfortable car seat after two days. So for the first time it was just me and my bike, noone to share...

It seems like forever since we've last written here. Family matters had drawn us both home after our last blog entry from Vancouver. It was quite a surprise to everyone at home. We had made up our minds pretty spontaneously and booked a flight back home within 5 days. Imagine the look on the face of Laura's mum when we suddenly stood in the doorway, completely unexpected... For us it felt quite right to finish this incredible journey, which had taken us over 4 continents, together back home...

It was in Portland that we decided it was time for a little decoration on our bikes. Instead of hanging a heavy terracotta pot from her handlebar, as we had seen on another cyclist's bike before, Christina opted for the slightly lighter version of an „air plant“ on the frame, while Laura found a plastic pet panda to replace the beautiful green horn that was stolen in Vietnam. We're travelling in style! The stretch from Portland to Seattle marked the last section through the Cascade...

Arriving at Lassen Volcanic National Park, we were surprised that there were a lot less cars on the roads than in the National Parks we'd been to before. It's a relatively small park, but with a fascinating kind of out-of-the-world vulcanic landscape, complete with vulcanic stones, lava fields, bubbling and smoking mud-pools and scattered patches of remaining snow in the higher elevations. Throughout the next days, the landscape along the roadside was formed by cold lava. We even went on a...

We arrived at Sequoia National Park and were amazed by those giant trees! They truly are beautiful giants, you only realize the size of the trees once you stand underneath them and feel like a tiny ant on the ground – and they are very very old, some more than 3000 years. Leaving Sequoia NP, we continued on to Kings Canyon National Park. As we've learned before, things don't always go as planned and so we ended up staying in Grant Grove Village for almost 2 weeks due to a bad cold Christina...

In New Zealand, but especially now in California, we have met a lot of people curious about our trip (probably mostly about how far we'll make it...) and our blog. And since we promised at least half of them that we'll start writing in English soon, here we are now, writing our first English blog post. About three weeks ago we arrived in Los Angeles and spent some relaxed days at our Warmshowers host Richard's place, exploring Los Angeles by bicycle and again catching up with Resal, Martin,...
